SIGNS OF DRUG ABUSE
Signs of drug abuse can be blatant and signs of drug abuse can be
well hidden. Signs of drug abuse come in many different forms. Signs
of drug abuse need to be recognized. The reason recognition of signs
of drug abuse is so important is because of a thing called "denial".
Denial is when, no matter how blatant the signs of drug abuse are,
the addict still believes that they don't have a problem. This is
the root of addictions power.
Signs of drug abuse are all relative. What
that statement means is that not all drugs manifest themselves
as the same signs of drug abuse. Even though they might not give
off the exact sign there are many signs that go along with any
type of drug abuse.
The first of the many signs of drug abuse that
all drugs have in common is the erratic change in emotion. Anyone
close to the drug addict will notice that the person is having
mood swings. Whether they are drastic mood swings or relatively
small the people who care will pick up on them. All drugs that
can be abused share this sign. The ones that are unique to which
drug is being abused are the more obvious of the signs of drug
abuse.
For instance, one sign of heroin abuse is track
marks on the inner side of the elbow. A sign of crack abuse is
burnt thumbs and singed eyebrows. The most obvious sign of marijuana
abuse is red eyes and the smell. LSD might reveal itself by the
dilation of the pupils. Erratic behavior, such as cleaning non-stop
or incessantly picking at ones face, is a sign of the use of speed.
Yellowing of the skin and eyes is a sure sign of alcohol abuse.
As you can see, there are many different signs
of drug abuse, quite possibly just as many types of drugs to use.
But the physical signs of drug abuse and the behavioral signs
of drug abuse are different. A heroin addict might receive track
marks while a crack addict might singe his eyebrows, but they
both are likely to steal. So there are correlations between drugs
and their signs of drug abuse.
People on PCP might become violent, while people
who are drunk might act the same way. Very different drugs but
they both cause the same actions. This shows how important it
is to watch out for the signs of drug abuse.
Pay careful attention to actions and emotional
behavior. They are both the key in finding out if the person is
abusing drugs or not. One bad day doesn't justify suspicion but
falling grades and angry outbursts do.
The most important thing to do is be honest
with yourself or the person you love's drug abuse. Ask them if
they are using, rather than looking for the signs.
