DRUG ADDICTION
Drug addiction is a disease; therefore drug addiction should not
be treated as a character deficiency. Drug addiction is fatal and
kills many people each year. Drug addiction can seem too powerful
to hope for sobriety. But with treatment centers everywhere drug
addiction can be fought and sobriety can be won. The only hope is
that those who suffer form drug addiction seek out help.
Drug addiction affects everyone. Most people
think of a drug addict as being someone sleeping in the gutter
and begging for change. Those people couldn't be further from
the truth. Drug addiction can affect anyone. There are doctors,
lawyers, housewives, businessmen, college students, teens, and
everyone else under the sun, that are addicted to drugs. Drug
addiction does not discriminate. There are women, men, blacks,
and whites, Asians, young, old, rich, and poor that are addicted
to drugs.
No one is immune from the power of drug addiction.
The most horrific thing about drug addiction is how it begins.
It might start from one drink, one pill, one shot, or one drag
of a marijuana cigarette. The main misconception is that not all
drugs are addicting. It is true that not all drugs are physically
addicting but this doesn't mean that these drugs aren't emotionally
or mentally addicting.
Mental and emotional addictions are of the
strongest addictions. Physical addiction is easy to solve. Just
place the person in detox until the body can safely live without
the drug. But the emotional addiction must be addressed with counseling
and group therapy.
Mental addiction is known to last years. The
obsession for the drug might not go away for up to ten years after
the person used last. This is where drug addiction pulls its power.
People from many different walks of life become
addicted to drugs. This is why it is so important that people
work together to stay sober. All twelve-step groups find that
the only way they can stay sober is by working with other drug
addicts and helping them stay sober. In a treatment atmosphere
the patients work together for sobriety. They find that this is
the only way to better themselves.
Once released from treatment the ones who stay
sober join twelve step groups. There they work the twelve steps
with a sponsor and begin to work emotionally on their problems.
From the prescription pill addicted housewife
to the crack addicted homeless man there is hope. Together they
can stay sober. But it must start somewhere.
