In 1964, the American Medical Association classified drug addiction as a disease, opening the door for what is now the accepted model of drug abuse treatment.

Alcohol abuse treatment is approached in much the same way, with an initial period of detox followed by residential treatment. Social model is based on finding alcoholic or drug addict patients initial reasons for alcohol or drug use, then making an emotional connection between consequences and triggers. For example, in the lifeline exercise, which is presented early on in drug abuse treatment, patients are encouraged to examine events that have taken place in their lives, connecting feelings and actions to actual drug addiction. Once these issues are examined, the door is opened for continued recovery.
