ALANON
Alanon was founded over fifty years ago, and
ever since its inception alanon has been helping people cope with
the damage that alcoholism has had on their lives. Alanon is not
for the alcoholic. Alanon is for the people who have been directly
affected by an alcoholic that is emotionally close to them. Alcoholism
is a family disease, is what alanon believes. This means that

Alcoholism affects many aspects of the alcoholic's

cares about. The alcoholic might become verbally abusive, saying
things that cut deep into the person's emotions. All of these
things are very hurtful and must be tended to.
The main misconception about alanon is that
the members there have only active alcoholics in their lives.
This is not true. Alanon is for anyone being affected by alcoholism.
This means that even if the alcoholic you care about is sober,
you could benefit from these meetings.
Just because the alcoholic is not drinking
doesn't mean that emotional damage doesn't need to be addressed.
In some cases the family has become so accustomed to the person
being an active alcoholic that they don't know how to handle the
alcoholics sobriety. In this case alanon is just the place for
these issues.
